Exercise is essentail!

Exercise for Pit Bulls, or any other breed of dog is essential. There are many ways to get exercise for your Pit Bull. Walks are a great source, not only does it give your dog exercise, but it gives you and your dog the opportunity to meet other dogs, and other people while walking. This is a great time to work on leash skills. Treadmills are not only used by people who are training their dogs for fighting! Treadmills are a way for your dog to get the exercise he or she needs, while not taking too much time out of your busy schedule. Playing fetch is a great way to make your hyper dog, very very sleepy! There are other ways to exercise your dog without physical activity. I know you probably think I'm crazy, but I'm not. Mental stimulation for your dog is also needed. Toys that you can put treats into, or chew toys that make your dog work for the reward, ARE GREAT!! This is a link that some other great ideas!

TV shows that stand up for Pit Bulls!

Animal Planet is a great channel on TV that has a bunch of different shows that show just how great Pit Bulls are.

Pit Boss
is probably my favorite. This series is on Saturday nights at 10 P.M. This show is about a man who used to breed Pit Bulls, got into some trouble with the law and went to jail for 10 years. Not only is this a great base to a show, but he is a little person. This little persons name is Shorty. The show is him rescuing Pit Bulls from death row, from people who can't have their dogs due to new laws, or just abandoned Pit Bulls left to die. At Shorty's Rescue he employees three other little people. They go out and do entertainment for Shorty's Rescue, to help save more Pit Bulls! Below is a short clip of Pit Boss.

Another one of my favorite shows is Pit Bulls and Parolees. This show starts back up October 30th at 10 P.M. This is a show about a woman named Tia, who runs the largest Pit Bull Rescue center in the United States. Not only does she give the Pit Bulls a second chance, she gives convicts a second chance too. Seven of her employees are convicts out on parolee. Below is a clip of Pit Bulls and Parolees!

My Story

I have always had this deep love for pit bulls. I can't explain it in any other way then simply saying that everyone believes what they hear in the media without really knowing from first hand experiences. Pit Bulls are the most misunderstood breed in the k9 world.

I had recently moved into a new house where they allow pets. I begged and begged my boyfriend to let me get a Pit Bull, and he eventually said that it was okay. I started looking through rescue centers in my area along with ASPCA centers, and I found that they will only allow someone of 25 years of age to adopt a bully breed. Devastation fell on me.

As I completely disagree with buying Pit Bulls from breeders. I started my search online on petfinder.com. I found a liter of puppies not to far away from my house for $175.00. Which is the same price to adopt one from a shelter. So I started e-mailing this girl who was selling the puppies and as I discussed it with my boyfriend we decided to go get her.

As I pulled up to this old broke down house. I saw this woman with my little white puppy on the porch. As I realized this puppy was extremely underweight and had obviously been outside for most of its life, I had to get this puppy and leave as quickly as possible. As I walked up to the porch this big male Pit Bull approached me. The owners told him to go lay down. I started to ask some questions to if she was healthy and if she has had any problems. I realized that the mother was no where in sight. So I politely asked where is the mother to the puppies, the owner responded with, "She had an accident and died." As I was completely taken back by this comment, I needed to save this puppy and get out of there ASAP!

As I left all I could think of was oh my gosh, I just saved this puppies life! When I got home I took her to the vet to get a complete check up to make sure she was going to be okay. As the vet told me that she was a little underweight, but other than that her test came back clean. She was in perfect health over all. As I told the vet what the owners had told me about the mother dog, this look just over came the vets face. She asked me how many puppies were in the liter, I told her 4 and she just kind of sat there. As she looked up at me she said, "Well Nicole I can honestly tell you that you saved this dogs life, the owners probably killed the mother seeing how she is only producing 4 puppies." As she explained it to me if the family is living off selling puppies and the mother is only having 4 puppies, the mother is of no use to them anymore.

I was completely devastated by this news but in a way happy that I had saved this puppy from that kind of life.

This is the story of how that little white puppy on the porch became my loving dog NeVaeh!

What to know before you adopt a bully breed

There are many things one should know before bringing a bully breed into your home. I encourage everyone to do their own research before adopting, but here is a site to get you started. Animal Planet is a great place to go to find information about Pit Bulls and Bully Breeds. This is not the only place though, I would encourage everyone to Google the information your looking for and dig until you find the answers to all your questions.

There are many things to put into consideration before bringing a bully breed into your family: 1. Do you have the time? 2. Are you ready to put in the work to ensure that the dog will be raised correctly? 3.Is your whole family ready for this commitment?

I hope this post helps everyone out there that is looking to adopt a bully breed, and what you should do before doing so.

Have a GREAT dayyy everyone!
